The new set-up of the Hall of the Sundial has been inspired by the decoration which
characterized it under the Direction of Amedeo Maiuri, in 1927.
Various elements of today’s set-up belong to the project conceived by the director Maiuri: two octagonal wooden benches made in 1907, some basins, including the pavonazzetto marble one, which has been restored for this purpose, once identified in the warehouses, and two labra, which belonged to Caroline Murat, queen of Naples; the first one, made of rosso antico marble, is from Pompeii and is placed on a modern base from the 18 th century, whereas the second one is a 17 th century creation and is characterized by a tripod-shaped sustain with lion-heads.
At the end of the Hall of the Sundial the two famous so-called Piranesi marble candelabra are on display: they are two examples of how skillfully, during the neoclassical period, ancient fragments were “re-combined” in modern works.
Finally, two ancient statues from Herculaneum, which represent the muses Urania and Erato, evoke the glory of the arts, portrayed by the painter Bardellino in the fresco of the ceiling.
